"Come, my King! Take your throne in our land. Be present in my heart. Be Lord of my family, my fears and my doubts." This is no feeble request; it's a bold appeal for God to occupy every corner of my life. [And] who are you to ask such a thing? Who are you to ask God to take control of your world? You are His child, for heaven's sake! And so you ask boldly. 0 comments Tuesday, August 7, 2007 ( The Worshipful Heart @ 12:01 PM ) Worship is a daunting task. For that reason, God gave us the Psalms - a praise book for God's people . . . This collection of hymns and petitions are strung together by one thread - a heart hungry for God. Some are defiant. Others are reverent. Some are to be sung. Others are to be prayed. Some are intensely personal. Others are written as if the whole world would use them . . . The very variety should remind us that worship is personal. No secret formula exists. What moves you may stymie another. Each worships differently. But each should worship 0 comments Friday, August 3, 2007 ( An Old Man's Prayer @ 11:10 AM ) You probably have. That's the story of Daniel, an elderly Jewish man in Babylon who was sentenced to death for faithfully talking to God. (Dan.6) Although the prayer that sent Daniel to the lions' den in his most famous talk with God. (6:11), it wasn't the only time we see him in prayer. In Daniel 9, we read an example of how he prayed. Daniel had been reading in his scroll of Jeremiah that the captivity of his people would last 70 years, and the people were 67 years the exile (Jer 25:8-11). He was eager of it to end. God had called His people to live righteously, but they weren't doing that. Daniel decided to live righteously despite their lack of faith. He began to pray that God would not delay the end of the captivity. As he prayed, Daniel focused on worship and confession. His pattern of prayer gives us an important insight into talking to God. We are to recognize that God is "great and awesome" (v.4) and that "we have sinned" (v.15). In prayer, we praise and confess. Let's follow Daniel's lead. To him, prayer was as vital as life itself. What privilege is mine to come Before the Father's throne, To speak to Him in earnest prayer, Make all my wishes known No one stands as tall as a Christian on his knees 0 comments Wednesday, August 1, 2007 ( The Bell @ 12:37 PM ) I KNOW WHO I AM I am God's child (John 1:12) I am Christ's friend (John 15:15) I am united with the Lord (1 Cor 6:17) I am bought with a price (1 Cor 6:19-20) I am a saint (set apart for God) (Eph 1:1) I am a personal witness of Christ (Acts 1:8) I am the salt & light of the earth (Matt 5:13-14) I am the member of the body of Christ (1 Cor 12:27) I am free forever from condemnation (Rom 8:1-2) I am citizen of heaven. Keep this bell ringing . . . 0 comments Tuesday, July 31, 2007 ( Cracked Lenses @ 10:13 AM ) In life, pain often functions like cracked lenses. It creates within us a conflict between what we experience and what we believe. pain can give us a badly distorted perspective on life- and on God. In those times, we need our God to provide us with new lenses to help us see clearly again. That clarity of sight usually begins when we turn our eyes upon the Lord. The psalmist encourages us to do this: "My eyes are upon You, O GOD the Lord; in You I take refuge; do not my soul destitute" (141:8). Seeing God clearly can help us see life's experiences more clearly. As we turn our eyes to the Lord in times of pain and struggle, we will experience His comfort and hope in our daily lives. He will help us to see everything clearly again. Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face; And the things of the earth will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace. Focusing on Christ puts everything in perspective. 0 comments Friday, July 27, 2007 ( Wandering From Wisdom @ 3:28 PM ) When Solomon was given that choice, he asked for wisdom to discern good from evil so that he might lead God's people well (1 Kings 3:9). "Because you have asked this thing." God told Solomon, "I have done according to your words." He even promised to give him"both riches and honor" (vv. 11-13). To this day, Solomon is remembered for the great wisdom God gave him. Solomon began his rule with devotion to wisdom and a deep ambition to build a magnificent temple to honor God. But something happened along the way. His passion for living by God's wisdom was displaced by the allures of the wealth and position God had given him. Keep our love for Christ and His wisdom preeminent is a primary objective for those of us who want to live to satisfy God throughout the course of our life. A commitment to following the riches of God's wisdom will enable us to avoid the drift that destroyed Solomon. Keep your heart in time with God's wisdom and obey His voice. Monitor your heart daily to avoid wandering from God's wisdom 0 comments Wednesday, July 25, 2007 ( Common Sense @ 11:03 AM ) On a hair dryer: do not use while you are sleeping On an iron: do not iron clothes on body On a chainsaw: do not attempt to stop chain with your mind Common sense can be learned from experience or the teaching we receive from those we trust. But God's Word is the best source of all to develop discernment and good judgement. Three words echo throughout the book of Proverbs: wisdom, knowledge and understanding. God has packed this book with common sense. Proverbs 11:12 advises restraint: "A man of understanding holds his peace." Proverbs 17:27 warns: "He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit." Proverbs 20:13 is practical: "Do not love sleep, lest you come to poverty." To get more common sense, consult God's Word - the source of wisdom- daily. Knowledge without common sense is folly. 0 comments Tuesday, July 24, 2007 ( Quiet, Please @ 3:34 PM ) We live in a world filled with noise-noises designed to sell, plead, seduce and deceive. In the midst of this cacophony of sound, it's easy to miss the one voice that matters most. Elijah had listened to Jezebel's threats and the voice of his own fear, so he fled to a cave to hide. In the cave he was confronted with the overwhelming noise of a wind, an earthquake, and fire (1 Kings 19:11-12). Then the cave grew silent and the voice of the Lord-the only sound that mattered-broke through as "a still small voice" (v.12) If we are to hear God speaking to our hearts through His Word, we need to pull away from the noise of the crowd. Only when we learn to be quiet can we really understand what it means to commune with the God who cares for us. Speak, Lord, in the stillness While I wait on Thee; Hushed my heart to listen In expectancy. To hear God's voice, turn down the world's volume. 0 comments Wednesday, July 18, 2007 ( Peace Treaties of Love @ 12:18 PM ) In repairing a relationship, it's essential to realize that no friendship is perfect, no marriage is perfect, no person is perfect. With the resolve that you are going to make a relationship work, you can develop peace treaties of love and tolerance and harmony to transform a difficult situation into something beautiful. 0 comments Friday, July 13, 2007 ( A Big View of God @ 11:12 AM ) Worship is the act of magnifying God. Enlarging our vision of him. Steeping into the cockpit to see where He sits and observe how he works. Of course, His size doesn't change, but our perception of Him does. As we draw nearer, He seems larger. Isn't that what we need? A big view of God? Don't we have big problems, big worries, big questions? Of course we do. Hence we need a big view of God. Worship offers that. How can we sing, "Holy, Holy, Holy" and not have our vision expanded? 0 comments |
